Gabriel Iglesias Premiers Show on Comedy Central

Hey It’s Fluffy—Gabriel Iglesias Has Show On Comedy Central

Gabriel “Mr. Fluffy” Iglesias premiered last Thursday in his new Comedy Central show, Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-Up Revolution.  As a huge fan, I thought that this was something long overdue.  I was, finally, able to put a face to Iglesias notorious friend, Martin, who is the show’s announcer.  Throw in eclectic Cali rockers Ozomatli as the house band and it was a done deal.

Overall, I thought that the first episode gave him a strong start.  The show opened with an excellent monologue where Iglesias detailed him and his entourage being questioned by border guards just outside of Phoenix.  His jokes were hilarious.  He didn’t seem to try too hard hard for his laughs and he had me cracking up.  By the time that the next comedian came up, my throat hurt from laughing.

The next comedian, Alfred Robles’ half-baked set seemed a little lukewarm.  The pace had a very staccato, stop-and-go feel.  His set improved as he went on, though I felt that his jokes often fell short.  I forgot that the show was only 30 minutes long.  When it came to the end of his set, I can’t say that I was disappointed.

The last comedian of the night, Rick Gutierrez, was hilarious.  A lot of his jokes drew on growing older and what happens to the body, as a result.  His set flowed really well and his jokes kept coming—never letting up and generating a chain reaction of laughs.  I have to admit that I was sad when he finished.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to see more of him on Comedy Central.

The cherry on the cake was the premier of the Ozomatli music video for “Hey It’s Fluffy,” a song that they wrote as a tribute to Iglesias.  The song and the video was very lighthearted and one of the catchiest songs that I’ve heard in awhile.  As I watched the video, I told my wife that, honestly, this song should become the show’s theme song.

If you missed his Thursday premiere, then you need to tun in next Thursday.  If this first episode is a clue to the show’s the future, then it will have a bright one indeed.  As I said before, it’s been long overdue.
