How Transparent Is Mayor Bing’s Administration?

Since Monica Conyers resigned her position from the Detroit city council, the fabled halls of the Coleman A. Young Building have been strangely quiet. There has been little noise from the office and city council’s offices, respectively, except for the firing of Police Chief Barren. It’s interesting how there was supposed to be this transparent government and open friendly office, but all I have seen and heard is well-scripted press statements. What is going on? The police chief was fired and there was barely a peep from Mayor Bing.

I am waiting for the real leadership to step up to the plate but, I have a feeling the wool has been pulled over our eyes. The next election is August 4th. Even though no one is really giving Mayor Bing strong competition, I feel compelled to not vote for him. I have seen no change in the safety of my neighborhood, trash pickup or opportunities for my family. At least with former Mayor Cockerel, I could say, “Look. He has opened up the mini-stations.”

I hope that real leadership, accountability and integrity shows up. I am tired of hearing these words tossed around like an old football. Monica Conyers may be shameful, but at least you knew what was going on. She would come on television and talk. Mayor Bing has yet to do this. I wonder if he is giving us a break because of all the previous coverage that the Kilpatrick administration received.

It’s sad to feel that I have to beg for information and updates. Not responding to citizen complaints is another issue that has been creeping up for several weeks. If this keeps up, we will have another kooky situation on our hands. Hasn’t anyone learned? Kwame Kilpatrick, Monica Conyers, Alonzo Bates and others misused the public’s trust and resources. Whatever is happening in the mayor’s office will eventually come to light and I hope and pray that it is honorable. If not, Mayor Bing will be the next one purged from the Coleman A. Young Building.
