Los Lobos Lights Up Arts, Beats & Eats.

Three-time Grammy Award winning group Los Lobos played the Phoenix Amphitheater to headline opening night for Pontiac’s Art, Beats & Eats.  Taking the stage at about 8 PM, the band fired up the crowd with Tex-Mex flavored rock beats and old time favorites from the late Ritchie Valens.

Thousands showed up on what could not have been a more picture perfect night. It was about 80° with clear skies and a light breeze blowing-an ideal setting for an outdoor concert.  Those that arrived early were sure to find the best seating.  Others settled for the lawn seats.  Most sprawled out their blankets, sat with friends and took in the concert.

The composition of the crowd was surprisingly diverse.  One could see Tex-Mex style attire standing along side people with rock shirts and headbands.  Young and old, everyone moved to the rhythms as they sang their way through the classic songs.

The surprising thing is that Los Lobos are no strangers to Pontiac.  They mentioned that they had visited the area several times in their 36 plus year history as a band.  To prove this point, halfway through the concert, vocalist, David Hildago, shouted “It’s great to be back in Pontiac.”

A fitting event for such artists, Los Lobos stayed true to their roots as they went through hit after hit from their numerous albums.

The group finally topped off the night with an extremely powerful rendition of “La Bamba” as a tribute to Ritchie Valens.  After vocalist Hidalgo belted out the first line “Para bailar La Bamba,” the crowd rose to their feet and began shouting with excitement.

By nights’ end, it was obvious that the fans were ecstatic about the performance.

Los Lobos is currently working on their highly anticipated 18th studio album.  Their latest album, a 2006 release, entitled Town & The City received numerous critical accolades, including a four star rating from Rolling Stone Magazine.
