MJ’s Real Legacy: Giving Back To The Community

Our American Icon, Michael Jackson,  is gone. It was such a shock to hear that he had a heart attack, went into a coma and died. Since his death, I have heard countless testimonials, memorials and tributes. None was more fitting than the actual homecoming service for Michael Jackson. Many countless people said how the service humanized him. What’s peculiar about this sentiment is that, for so long, many people placed Michael on a pedestal that was so high even he asked people to “leave me alone.” Now that he’s gone, people want to recognize his humanity, good works and, of course, his musical genius.

2000 Guinness World Records lists Michael Jackson as the most charitable pop star of all time (39 charities). He spent a great deal of time in Africa raising money for children’s causes. His “We are the World” song raised millions of dollars and increased awareness of the plight of hungry children in Africa. Despite the sordid accusations of pedophilia and weird behavior, Michael still managed to give money to the United Negro College Fund and other charities. The only other entertainer with perhaps the next comparable charitable impact is Bono from U2. I  don’t think there will be another entertainer who cared for the world like Michael.

In memory of Michael Jackson, I want to encourage everyone to give something back to their community. This will help us achieve Michael’s dream of “making the world a better place.” It doesn’t matter who you are. Everyone has a talent or gift to share with the world. Michael’s talent was music and dancing. My talent is writing and connecting people to opportunities. I am going to use my talents honoring an American Icon and helping others in return just like Michael. Remember it doesn’t matter if you’re “black or white.”
