MTEC SmartZone tenant, LiteBrake Tech, visits China with Governor Rick Snyder

MTEC SmartZone tenant company LiteBrake Tech, LLC, was one of eight Michigan-based auto parts companies selected to accompany Governor Rick Snyder on a mid-September trade mission to China.  The trip was organized by Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Pure Michigan Export Program to strengthen overseas trade relationships, attract job- creating business investments, and promote Michigan as a tourist destination.

While in China, Michigan companies joined in a Pure Michigan tradeshow booth at the 2013 China International Auto Parts Expo (CIAPE) in Beijing.  Held by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, CIAPE provides opportunities for auto suppliers to exhibit and promote their products and services to potential customers in Asia.

LiteBrake Tech promoted its patent-pending steel-clad aluminum brake rotor technology. Company founder Scott Huang said they are in the process of commercializing the technology, and saw the expo as an opportunity to network with high-level auto manufacturing executives, potential buyers and partners.

Huang, who is an owner of another incubator company, U.P. Steel, learned about the auto parts expo from MTEC SmartZone Program Director Jon Leinonen.  MEDC’s State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) program funded 50 percent of LiteBrake Tech’s travel expenses.

According to the MEDC:

  • China is the third largest export market for the U.S.
  • In 2012, U.S. exports reached a record $110.6 billion
  • China is Michigan’s third largest export market, with $3.3 billion in export sales in 2012
  • Over the past eight years, Michigan Exports to China have risen 365 percent
  • Also in China, companies made visits to auto OEMs and tier one automotive suppliers, and participated in match-making meetings with potential buyers.
