What do you think the number one killer of women is? Breast cancer? Diabetes? The answer might alarm you. More women die from heart disease every year over any other cause of death. It is the number one killer of women over 20 years of age.
According to the American Heart Association (http://english.goredcorazon.org/wear-red-day.html), “on average, Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than other women.” Many Hispanic women still do not realize how threatening this disease can be. Heart disease kills approximately one woman every minute. In fact, 1 in 30 American women will die of breast cancer, while 1 in 3 will die of cardiovascular disease. If these alarming statistics aren’t enough to get you thinking, then I don’t know what is.
February is National Heart Month. This month, Mi Estilo has committed to help educate it’s readers on heart health through a series of articles, recipes and tips that will hopefully help you become a more informed person.
This Friday, February 4th is the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day—in support of awareness for heart disease in women. It is as easy as putting on a red shirt, tie, sweater or hat. So this Friday join the fight against heart disease in women and wear some red. Make it a part of your estilo—I certainly will.
