Los 32 equipos participantes (ver tabla siguiente) están clasificados en 8 Grupos, con 4 equipos cada uno, que usarán el sistema de clasificación indicado más abajo:

Primera Ronda:
Cada equipo de los 32 iniciales compite dentro de su Grupo y sólo pasan a Octavos de Final el primero y el segundo clasificado en cada Grupo.

Octavos de Final, Cuartos de Final, Semifinal y Final:
Los equipos clasificados compiten contra el que les corresponda, pasando a las rondas siguientes por eliminación directa (sistema de clasificación que se usará hasta el fin del Torneo).

Partido por el tercer puesto:
Los dos equipos perdedores en semifinal competirán por el tercer puesto.

El primer campeonato internacional de fútbol fue disputado en 1872 entre Inglaterra (el inventor del deporte fútbol) y Escocia. Hasta el 1900 el fútbol raramente se jugaba fuera de Inglaterra. No obstante su popularidad iba creciendo rápidamente también afuera de Inglaterra, lo que llevan a la creación en 1904 de FIFA (Organización Mundial del Fútbol) y la inclusión del fútbol como deporte amateur en los Juegos Olímpicos de verano de Londres en 1908.

Visto el éxito y la popularidad mundial lograda en los Juegos Olímpicos, la FIFA decide comenzar en 1930 la Copa Mundial de Fútbol en Uruguay, ya que era el ganador Olímpico de futbol de1924 y 1928. Uruguay muestra nuevamente su gran nivel y venciendo a la Argentina, gana el torneo inaugural y se consagra como el primer campeón de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol.

Evolución cronológica del juego:

- Fútbol Rioplatense Sudamericano (Uruguay: 1930; 1950), (Argentina: 1978; 1986)

Al principio los jugadores no eran tan profesionales como es ahora, eran gente común que jugaban al fútbol principalmente por diversión y no contaban con entrenadores físicos, dietas deportivas, vitaminas, etc.

Como queda demostrado por las 4 Copas obtenidas, Uruguay y luego Argentina eran protagonistas del fútbol mundial, usando una estrategia de juego corto, sin pases largos ni juego aéreo, gambeteando entre rivales con pelota al piso y usando la famosa pared (dos atacantes que se pasan la pelota entre sí para esquivar a los defensores). Este tipo de juego no necesitaba mucho trabajo previo de entrenamiento y la improvisación era su mayor arma porque el rival no sabe cómo le jugarán…

-Fútbol Sudamericano no Rioplatense (Brasil: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002)

El estilo brasilero de juego (beneficiados por su componente afro) introduce variantes como ser velocidad, potencia física y altura de jugador que no son disponible en los países al sur de Brasil porque la esclavitud allí no existió. Es muy difícil ganarle un pique o un cabezazo a un jugador Brasilero. Pero es un placer ver con la alegría e intuición con que juegan. Inicialmente no se preocupaban mucho por la defensa, porque ellos hacían muchos goles, pero actualmente han mejorado su defensa.

Además de Brasil, otros países con descendientes africanos empezaron a destacarse, como ser: Colombia, Perú, Ecuador, etc.

-Fútbol Europeo hasta 1990 (Italia 1934 / 38 / 82); (Alemania 1954 / 74  / 90), (Inglaterra 1966)

Cada país estaba representado por jugadores que poseían la misma composición etnológica que el país que representaban. Su rendimiento deportivo estaba basado en el entrenamiento físico, mental y estratégico de sus jugadores. Así nace el “Fútbol ciencia” donde una cantidad de especialistas estudian el juego y el físico de los atletas para optimizar el rendimiento de los jugadores (convertidos en atletas) y así ganar científicamente.

Básicamente el fútbol Europeo es un juego rápido (digamos algo mecánico y sin mucha improvisación) de pases largos, mucho juego aéreo y que necesita de gran preparación física para enfrentarlo.

-Fútbol Europeo después de 1990 (no para Alemania e Italia) (Francia 1998), (Italia 2006)

Con la inclusión de jugadores Africanos y Sudamericanos en los campeonatos Europeos, quedó bien demostrado la ventaja deportiva que aportaban la potencia afro y la habilidad del juego corto sudamericano. Por eso los equipos Europeos a partir de 1990, evolucionaron incluyendo en sus equipos de Copa Mundial a jugadores reclutados de otros países.

- Fútbol Africano – la gran incógnita a revelarse en cualquier momento….

África está llamada a ser un protagonista en la Copa Mundial, la gran incógnita es cuando irá a pasar. Por el momento entrenadores están ayudando con su estrategia y estilo a los equipos Africanos, el potencial existe falta mejorarlo.

- Corolario

En definitiva el fútbol mundial está en continua evolución, cada Mundial es una prueba de fuego y veremos quién será el nuevo campeón y que estrategia triunfará.

El mapa siguiente muestra los 32 países clasificados para jugar y su ubicación geográfica.

La Copa Mundial ya se ha disputado 18 veces desde que se inició en 1930 y en títulos está actualmente empatado (9 a 9) entre nuestro nuevo continente Americano versus la vieja Europa.

Los candidatos lógicos de Europa son España (mi favorito) e Italia y por el continente Americano son Brasil y Argentina, pero en Fútbol muchas veces la lógica falla…

Me preguntarán cómo es que no pongo a Argentina como candidato siendo que posee una selección de superestrellas, incluyendo al mejor jugador actual del mundo (Messi) dirigidos por el mejor jugador de la historia (Maradona), pero yo creo que con la “globalización del fútbol” los países del tercer mundo resultan perjudicados al vender a sus mejores jugadores jóvenes a Europa  y que ser llamados para representar a sus selecciones Nacionales, no pueden ser entrenados porque no hay suficiente tiempo.  Por eso es muy importante poder pasar la primera ronda, porque el rendimiento del equipo irá aumentando con los partidos jugados.

Bueno es todo por ahora, no dejen de visitarnos la próxima semana con los comentarios previos de los primeros partidos a jugarse el Viernes 11 de Junio, entre México vs. Sudáfrica  y Uruguay vs. Francia.

From the original 35 teams, there are six teams left in the CONCAFAF region.  The top three teams automatically qualify, while the 4^th place team still has to play a home and away qualifying round with the 5^th placed team from South America’s group to advance.  With 16 points, the United States leads the group after 8 games.  Mexico follows in close second with 15 and Honduras rounds out the top three with 13 points.

What does all this mean?  With a possible six points (three points for a win or one for a draw) from the last two games, any of the top three could end up in the dreaded 4^th place spot.  With this squad is shaping up to possibly be two-time World Cup champion Argentina, nobody wants to end up in 4^th place.

This makes the next round of games crucial, especially the United States, who must travel to San Pedro Sula in Honduras to capture all three points for the win.  Honduras has been fierce at home-scoring 12 goals, while only giving up two.  If the United States can steal some points away, it would go a long way toward securing a place in South Africa.

If the United States wins in Honduras, they are all but assured a spot.  Accomplishing this will be a problem, as their record on the road has been less than stellar.  In the four road games the U.S. has played, they’ve recorded only a single win, which came on September 9^th at Trinidad and Tobago.  Add to that the Frankie Hejduk-inspired draw in El Salvador, the U.S. has only picked up four points on the road, which comes out to a below average 1-1-2 record.  A loss in Honduras does not spell disaster. If the U.S. can get a win or draw against Costa Rica in their final home game a week later, their place is still assured.  However, the smart move would be to get some points in Honduras to insure a better position before the final round.

No matter what, I can guarantee that the United States’ bumpy road to qualify will be an exciting one.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see them in action.

Christina, 39, met her husband, Matt, when he was then working in Argentina. They met at a pub that was frequented by Americans. The initial introduction was made through one of her friends and so began the adventure.

“Our first date we went to Tucumán. I took him by myself because I couldn’t speak any English and he couldn’t speak any Spanish. I took him to a place to eat empanadas. I was telling him, ‘These empanadas are great. They’re the best in the world.’ The empanadas came but they weren’t cooked enough. I told him that they were the best but the worst came,” Christina said with a chuckle. “As we ate, we didn’t say nothing. He’d had them before in Córdoba. He probably thought that I was a liar!”

At that time, the difference in language presented significant obstacles. However, both persisted in communicating with each other. Through a combination of sign language,  basic vocabulary and sheer tenacity, both kept going. Somehow, they made it work.

“He kept talking about [Mike] Tyson. He ate someone’s [Evander Holyfield's] ear. He tried explaining it to me but I didn’t understand nothing. It was an interesting conversation. I didn’t understand what he was talking about. He was using a translating machine. He was desperate to explain to me what he was talking about. I didn’t understand anything.”

After the initial introduction, they kept seeing each other. However, she was still keeping a secret: her age. It took her about a month to finally reveal the truth, which provided her a tremendous sense of relief.

“After that, my friend asked, ‘How old are you?’ I said, ‘Tell him that I’m 23.’ It took about a month for me to tell him the truth. The day that I told him the truth, he was probably wondering, ‘Are you married?’ It turned out that it was just about my age. He was happy when I told him because he was probably wondering if I had a baby, was divorced or had a boyfriend,” she explained.

Things kept progressing between Christina and Matt. A few months afterward, they traveled to Alabama where her future brother-in-law was getting married. This was big for two reasons. First of all, it was her first trip to America. Also, Christina would get to experience her first American wedding and see how different it was compared to Argentinian ones.

“At a party before the wedding, we were all in a restaurant and then everybody stopped eating and went outside. I asked Matt what was going on and he started laughing and said that everybody went outside to smoke. That doesn’t happen in my country because we can smoke all over the place. Nobody was inside but me and Matt. Eventually, I told him, ‘I gotta go.’ I was outside smoking and tried to talk to somebody,” she said with a chuckle.

Following the wedding in Alabama, Christina and Matt were invited to Indianapolis to visit his mother and stepfather. While his mother treated her well, the language barrier, as it was with Matt, continued to be a problem.  However, none of this stopped Christina from having her first experience with American-style pancakes. They were definitely not what she expected.

“The wedding was like three or four days. After that, his mom invited us. The funny thing is when we went to eat breakfast. It was the four of us: me, Matt, Matt’s mom and his step-dad. They invited us for breakfast. When I saw the menu, it was my first time eating pancakes. When I saw pancakes, I thought that it was the type like we have in Argentina-almost like crêpes. I was thinking pancakes with dulce de leche [type of caramel syrup]. When they gave me the pancakes-the pile of pancakes-I gave them a look like, ‘What is this?’ I was expecting my pancakes,” she said with a laugh. “Everybody was looking at me. I started eating. Put maple syrup on them. I ate them like a piece of bread.”

From her colorful introduction to American culture to the present, Christina views marrying an American and moving to the United States as an adventure-not something to be feared, but looking forward to the next experience.

“It was different-very different. I wasn’t nervous. To me, it was more like an adventure,” she concluded.
