Who Says You Can’t Go Out?

These days everybody is trying to find fun ways to save money. As summer approaches, there is no need to stay home and twiddle your thumbs because you can’t afford to go out. There are plenty of things to do in the Detroit area that are either free or cost next to nothing. Whether you are looking for a unique date idea or a way to spend some time with family or friends, you are sure to find something on this list that suits you. This is also a great way to check out new places or rediscover ones you haven’t been to in awhile.

  1. Take a walk or ride a bike along the Detroit International Riverfront. Over 2 miles of the riverfront have been revitalized stretching from Joe Louis Arena to beyond Rivard Plaza. There is free parking at Rivard Plaza just east of the GM Renaissance Center at Atwater and Rivard St. There is a concession stand for ice cream and a carousel to ride for just $1.00 per person. Bike rentals are available at Wheel House Detroit if you don’t want to bring yours along. Make sure you stop to play in the water fountain in front of the GM Wintergarden to cool down!
  2. On the evening of June 24, 2009, you can watch the annual Target Fireworks as they light up  the Detroit River. There are several places, such as Hart Plaza, to view this spectacular display for no cost.
  3. Spend a hot, humid summer day at The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). The DIA is known worldwide for its magnificent collections of art. Be sure to check out the mural painted by Diego Rivera, which is considered one of his most important works in the United States. Admission is $8.00 per adult and $4.00 per youth under 17.
  4. Pack a picnic and blanket and head to the Detroit Zoo for their summer concert series. Every Wednesday between July 1-August 26, the Zoo will be hosting a different musical act. Cost of concert is free with purchase of zoo admission.
  5. Check out many of the great summer festivals southeast Michigan has to offer. For an overview of some of the festivals happening this summer, visit: http://www.visitdetroit.com/index.php/festivals.
  6. Visit Belle Isle, which is the largest island park in the United States. There is no charge to take the bridge to Belle Isle. There are numerous things to do on the island that include: fishing, having picnics or visiting the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the historic white marble fountain facing the Detroit skyline. Be sure to bring your camera!
  7. Spend a Saturday taking in the great sights, sounds and wonderful smells of Eastern Market.
  8. Peoplewatch at Campus Martius Park located in downtown Detroit across from the Compuware Building. Campus Martius is the “town square” of Detroit. Grab a bite to eat from any of the nearby restaurants or pack your own snacks. Fourth Friday’s will kick off in Campus Martius on June 26. There will be live entertainment, give-aways and movies on the big screen starting at 9:30 pm. Fourth Friday’s will go through August 28th. All of these activities are free. For more information, visit: http://www.campusmartiuspark.org.
  9. Take a leisurely drive north on Jefferson Avenue starting from downtown Detroit heading towards Metro Beach in Harrison Township. Feel free to stop at any of the waterfront parks, shops and restaurants while taking in the beautiful views of Lake St. Clair.
  10. Cool off with a glass of ice cold beer at any of the local microbreweries located in the Metro Detroit area. Not only do you get to experience a great glass of beer but you will be supporting the fine local establishments.
As you can see there is plenty to do that won’t break the bank to have a good time. Finding these types of outings requires a little bit of creativity and an open mind. Enjoy your summer!
